Agile vigilance is to constantly monitor and adjust. It is a success factor; the agile manager will need to continuously be vigilant in monitoring the project progress and the project development team (Brad, 2014). Agile vigilance can also be called adaptive leadership. The objectives of adaptive leadership are tracking and monitoring the project for timely and relevant feedback. Agile project manager must be vigilant at all times in order to merit the mantle of leadership because visionary leadership requires continuous learning, monitoring and adaptation (Sirpa, 2008).


In leading a project team through the establishment of a guiding vision, fostering teamwork and cooperation, setting simple rules, championing open information, and managing with a light touch, the job of the manager has been likened to herding cats (CC Pace, 2011). Systemic procedure for learning and adaptation helps the agile manager to maintain a leadership presence that animates the team (Sirpa, 2008). The established rules helps to regularly examine what work needs improvement. Some of the adaptive changes that can be done when situations warrant are:

  • Reinforcing the guiding vision at every opportunity
  • Continually encouraging teamwork and collaboration
  • Keeping apprised of cultural sensitivities, egos, and other factors that may affect the success of the project.

Continuous improvement is about evaluating and identifying what has been done well and what needs to be improved. Agile vigilance applies to continuous improvement because evaluating and identifying gaps for improvement is monitoring progress of the project.

Change management helps the project meet expectations of stakeholders and help the project achieve success. Agile vigilance applies to change management because in a rapidly changing environment, the management of change is critical for the project. Adapting to change, controlling change, effecting change, a project can successfully adapt to change is the critical factor to ensure the project success (Margaret, 2010).

Project leadership leadership can be considered as not only a property, but also a process. It is a process that leaders within the project use their influences to conduct and coordinate the activities of the group members toward the completion of their project objectives according to (Cleland,1995). Agile vigilance applies to project leadership because in a diverse project team the agile manager will need to make sure that cultural sensitivities are monitored so they don't affect the project in a negative way. Also with looming deadlines, the agile manager will need to monitor the progress of the project.

Examples of use outside to IT domain

Agile vigilance can be seen demonstrated in sport like football. In a football team the manager constantly monitors and adjusts the game play depending on the score line and performance of the team or individual players. Another example is a supplier, who needs to monitor the stock and replenish effectively in order to fulfil the requirements and needs of the customers. Agile vigilance is useful in education for monitoring and reinforcing guiding vision.
